Transforming the Factory Floor AND Your Perceptions of 3D Printing

| Blake Teipel

Historically, 3D printing has been viewed as a prototyping technology — toys for engineers and inventors to experiment with different designs and materials on a small scale. When a product is ready for mass production, that’s when proven subtractive manufacturing processes usually take over to make the molds and affordably produce large quantities at scale through milling, cutting, injection molding and other methods.

At Essentium, we’re working to change that perception. We’ve raised the bar of additive manufacturing to be able to deliver the flexibility of 3D printing with the productivity of traditional manufacturing.

What’s different about our interpretation of additive manufacturing technology is that the Essentium HSE 180 3D Printing Platform is an industrial-strength machine designed to work hand-in-hand with traditional manufacturing machines on the factory floor. I often refer to it as the “machine tool of 3D printers” because it has the size, speed, and capacity to operate at scale. Not only can it make the jigs and fixtures used by workers to build a product, but many of the actual end-use parts themselves.

Want proof? Our machines have a build area measuring 690 x 500 x 600 mm (WxDxH), large enough to fit more than 85% of all global jigs and fixtures. They are also five to 15 times faster than any other extrusion printer on the market. The Essentium HSE 180•S Series uses linear servo motor technology for extremely accurate, high speed movement of the print head over the build area, depositing up to 500 mm of filament per second with 1 micron accuracy. That means it can print large tools in one seamless piece for maximum strength, or large quantities of small parts in batches to keep pace with other aspects of production on the factory floor.

So if you ask me what is needed to transform the factory floor, from my vantage point the answer is the Essentium HSE 3D Printing Platform. Our open ecosystem provides the flexibility our customers require to achieve tomorrow’s innovations. While I am steadfast in my belief that 3D printing will transform the factory floor, I also believe we need to continually educate prospects to change their perceptions and any preconceived notions of the technology.

I can point to several advantages of additive manufacturing, from shortening supply chains and increasing self-sufficiency to minimizing waste and speeding turnaround on design iterations. Our machines are able to work as hard and as fast as traditional methods. I know this; my team knows this; our customers know this. But to the uninitiated, these are not adjectives people usually associate with 3D printing. I invite you to contact us here at Essentium so that we may bring you up to speed on the many innovations in additive manufacturing and transform your factory floor as well as your perceptions of 3D printing.

Essentium, Inc. provides industrial 3D printing solutions that are disrupting traditional manufacturing processes by bringing product strength and production speed together, at scale, with an open ecosystem and material set. Essentium manufactures and delivers innovative industrial 3D printers and materials enabling the world’s top manufacturers to bridge the gap between 3D printing and machining to embrace the future of additive manufacturing.
